Laser Cut Books!

by Rong Xin Choy

I recently came across a used book fair and picked out a massive amount of pretty books. I will admit that I haven't the slightest intention to read them because they all are in foreign languages- they were picked and bought for their aesthetic value.

I wanted to give them a new lease of life by repurposing them. Stripping down the insides while keeping their covers and their spines intact to make notebooks. I also toyed with the idea of cutting out the insides to make them secret storage books like so:

Then I came across an artist who had laser cut books out for an exhibition, and thus  am revisiting the idea of using them for art. Check out this installation by Michael Mandiberg with laser-cut old books! I really liked how he paired the words with the encyclopedia and dictionary, on the right and left respectively.

Now if only I had access to a laser cutter I could do some serious detail to my books! More pictures of Michael's work can be found here.
